A single percentage is not a complete material specification. Before using an analytical result in procurement, identify the attribute being reported, the method and the result basis. These terms help you prepare questions for a qualified analytical reviewer; they do not replace that review.
Three questions to keep separate
Identity: does the analytical evidence support the identity being claimed? Record the method and the exact form named in the specification.
Purity or impurities: what components does the procedure distinguish and report? A chromatographic area percentage describes the result on its stated analytical basis; do not automatically read it as the mass fraction of every component in the container.
Assay: what quantity of the specified component does the procedure determine, and on what basis? Ask whether units and any stated corrections match the procurement specification.
ICH Q2(R2) treats identification, assay and impurity testing as distinct analytical purposes. The suitability of a procedure depends on its intended use. A method name alone does not settle that question.
Questions to send with a certificate query
- Which attribute does this reported result measure?
- What method and result basis were used?
- Which acceptance criterion applies to this material?
- Are the supporting records for the same lot?
- Which required attributes are not addressed by these tests?
- Who can assess whether the evidence meets our specification?
Do not infer sterility, absence of every contaminant, suitability for human use or fitness for a particular experiment from an HPLC purity figure. Those are different claims and need their own applicable evidence.
Carry the answer into the RFQ
Record the accepted test requirement explicitly in the quotation brief. Keep the certificate review with the specification so a future batch is not accepted merely because its headline number resembles a previous one.
